Hanging Succulent Planter – The Home Depot Gift Challenge

Hanging Succulent Planter - www.refashionablylate.comI am so excited because I’m joining some amazing ladies for a monthly challenge called “The Home Depot Gift Challenge.”  Each month a member chooses an item from Home Depot and we have to create a project with it.  Also each month our project is a gift.  This month’s gift is for ourselves! πŸ™‚  We do have a gift for you so when you are finished head on down to the bottom and sign up for our giveaway!

I love the “idea” of plants in my home because any time I’ve had plants they…die. πŸ™  I thought a good starting point would be to start with succulents.  They don’t need to be watered that often. πŸ™‚  This month’s item was a house repair clamp so I wanted to make a succulent planter using the hose clamps.

I started by staining piece of wood I had cut to the size I needed at the store.  I used Rust-Oleum Wood Stain in Weathered Gray.  I love this color and it goes great with my gray walls!  You start by applying a coat of stain and only about 2 minutes later you rub the excess stain off with a cloth, I used a paper towel.

After the stain was dry I laid out the the pots and succulents on top of the wood to put them in the right place.  I then marked the wood where I wanted each pot to be placed.  (By the way, the pots and succulents were both purchased at IKEA.)

This project took a little trial and error.  My original plan was to screw the hose clamps into the wood so we started by drilling holes into the wood with drill bits.

Then my husband tried drilling holes into the hose clamps and it was not budging!  These thin metal clamps are tough cookies!

Thankfully our neighbor was hanging outside with us, while our kids played and suggested trying out her jewelry metal punch!  I had no idea this little tool existed and it worked like a charm!  I couldn’t believe it!  You just put the metal punch in place and screw it until it punches through the metal!  I was dumbfounded!

We then tried to screw the screws into place and the darn things would NOT screw through the metal as it was wider than the punched hole.  These things are strong little buggers!  We then went the nail route! Thankfully that worked and secured the hose clamps in place onto the piece of wood.

Doesn’t my husband look so happy he helped me with this project?! πŸ˜‰

All that was left to do was to hang it on the wall!  I found some wall hangers in my tool box so I nailed it in to the back of the piece of wood.

So to make this easier on yourself follow these simple steps:

1. Stain Wood

2. Punch holes in hose clamps with metal jewelry punch

3. Nail the clamps onto your piece of wood

4. Attach a wall hanger

5. Hang on the wall and enjoy! πŸ™‚

I hope you can follow the simpler steps to create your own hanging succulent planter and learn from my mistakes!  Hey somebody has to make them right?!  Now head on over and see what else these other amazing ladies created with hose repair clamps!  I’m seriously in awe of these ladies and feel lucky to work alongside them!  Click on a picture to direct you to their webpage!

I LOVE this! I have seen these with mason jars and herbs before but not with succulents… and since a succulent is the only plant I can keep alive I will have to give this a try!

Haha I’m the same Sydney! I’m terrible at keeping plants alive! That’s why I went the succulent route! πŸ™‚

Oooo, that gray is gorgeous!! I’ll definitely have to remember that little tool next time I have to punch through something like these, drilling the holes was super hard for me too!
