Hey everyone! It’s week 2 of the One Room Challenge. Woohoo! We’ve made it to week 2! Doesn’t seem like much but man these projects are not for the faint at heart. It’s a lot of work! I really enjoy it though…for the most part. This past week we have been working on removing two cabinets, repairing holes, priming walls and painting the woodwork and trim. This is probably the least fun part of the process of this transformation.
If you missed last week’s post with all of the before pictures you can find it here:
I’m also doing our nursery and here is our progress:
My husband and father-in-law removed the cabinet above the toilet and the medicine cabinet on the side of the mirror. It was a fairly easy process as they were just screwed into the wall. It only took a little force to pull them off because they had years of caked on paint around the edges. Once the cabinets were removed we had to fill in the holes with Dry Dex and then sand down the caked on paint and covered holes.
We weren’t able to 100% sand it down perfectly so next I added a thick layer of primer to hopefully even out the area. Once the paint is dry we plan to sand it a little more evenly before we add our final paint.
Well this didn’t work as I had hoped as you could still visibly see the lines from the previous caked on paint. I decided to get my BFF Dry Dex out and outline the area. My husband is so excited to do some sanding again! 🙂
I also wanted to get all of my cabinets and woodwork painted sooner than later. I didn’t want to have to do a ton of taping off so I thought this was a great time. I didn’t have to tape off the wall or the floor as they are both going to be painted and replaced. I started with two coats of primer and then two coats of paint. I continued with the same color I used on our kitchen remodel, Zurich White, by Sherwin-Williams. I also sprayed the cabinet doors with a paint sprayer so I would have an even and smooth finish. For a detailed tutorial on how to paint cabinets you can check out my kitchen tutorial here.
Here is where we are at with our to do list:
Paint bathroom cabinets & trim
- Paint vanity counter tops
- Rip out previous linoleum (2 layers..fun!)
- Tile floor & wall
Remove medicine cabinet & cabinet above toilet
- Replace mirror
- Replace light fixture
- Change outlets & switches
Repair holes in wall from cabinet removal & towel bars
- Paint walls
- Replace toilet paper holder and towel rod
- Replace faucet
A few things checked off which is always reassuring! Anxious for what is in store next week! Thanks for stopping by and I’ll see you all next week with Week 3’s progress. Thank you again to my sponsors.

This is looking great, Ruthie! Good call on painting the cabinets early on. They look really great, and I love the hardware.
Thanks Brittany! I love the hardware too! It really makes the cabinets look even more beautiful!
You are so lucky that you have accomplished so much, I was stuck in a hotel room and just got back Monday, I love the knobs on the vanity so clean and chic. Everything is coming together for you right on track.
Thanks Maria! I really like how it’s falling into place! Still feeling anxious to finish it all but I’m going to be so happy when it’s done!
Looking good! Great idea with spraying those cabinets instead of rolling them.
Yes I love spraying cabinets! It makes the whole process so much easier and quicker!
You’ve done a lot! It’s looking good so far – love that hardware on the cabinets!
Thanks! I love the hardware too! I had something else in mind and then came across the pulls and fell in love!
Holy smokes! SUCH great progress so far!!! Keep it up friend!
Thanks Kristi! It feels good but I still have so much more to do!

All that work on your wall makes me dread pulling down our massive mirror in our master one day, lol, but it looks great on your end so it must be worth it! Loving the hardware choices too!
Thanks Iris! The mirror wasn’t that hard to do. Ours wasn’t glued to the wall thankfully but it was caked on with a few coats of paint! So it’s just evening out the wall now! 🙂
Yay! The progress is SO satisfying isn’t it?! Love it so far!
Yes seeing the room slowly come together is super rewarding! The best is when it will be done and I can just relax and wait for baby to come!
