One Room Challenge Nursery Week 2 - www.refashionablylate.com

Here we are in week 2 of the One Room Challenge in our nursery!  This room makes me incredibly happy.  The more progress I see the more excited I am to bring this little bundle of joy into the world! Life is good!  So this week has been all about painting.  In the bathroom, I painted all of the trim and cabinets and I followed by painting all of the trim in the nursery as well.  If you missed all of the before pictures of the nursery you can find them here:

Week 1

Here’s my bathroom progress:

Week 1  |  Week 2

I wanted to give a more detailed tutorial on how I have been painting the trim in our home.  It’s a slow process, I’m not going to lie, but sooooo worth it!  I wish I had a million hours in the day so I could get my entire home’s trim painted and be done!  I love walking into the nursery and seeing the beautiful white trim.

To start I had my husband give all of the woodwork a light sand.  I then used my secret trick of cleaning by wiping it all down with Lysol Wipes.  I think it does a really great job of deep cleaning the area in preparation for primer.  I then gave all of the woodwork 2 coats of primer.  I followed it with two coats of my go-to cabinet and trim paint, Sherwin-Williams ProClassic® Interior Waterbased Acrylic-Alkyd Enamel in Zurich White.  I love that it’s white but has a touch of cream to it.  It’s a beautiful compliment to all of the colors in my home.

One Room Challenge Nursery Week 2 - www.refashionablylate.comThe difference with painting the trim in the nursery verses the bathroom is I had to figure out how to not get paint on the carpet.  The perfect solution to this problem is Glad Press’n Seal!  It’s seriously the most amazing tool in painting trim with carpet.  You lay it down flush with the carpet and woodwork and then take a putty knife and push it down between the carpet and woodwork.  This protects your carpet perfectly and then it removes so easily once you are finished!  The Press’n Seal is better than a regular Saran Wrap because it clings to the carpet.

Excuse the poorly taken iPhone photos 🙂

After we got all of the woodwork painted around the room I got some assistance from my Mom and we painted the room.  We went with Extra White by Sherwin-Williams in Eggshell.  I wanted a sheen that could be washed but wasn’t too glossy.  We have painted our entire house’s ceilings in Extra White Flat paint so that also helped with cutting in at the top of the walls.  🙂  We also removed the closet doors as I will be replacing them with drapes and painted in the inside of the closet the same color of the walls.

Once the room was painted we then got ready to wallpaper the focus wall where the crib will be living.  I had never wallpapered before so my Mom was a huge help as she has wallpapered many, many times! She kind of is a professional with how much she has done! As I watched her I felt very overwhelmed but realized it’s not that terrible of a job!  Before she applied the wallpaper she put a coat of wallpaper primer on the wall the evening before so that it had overnight to dry.  Here is a sneak peek of the wallpaper….isn’t it amazing?!

One Room Challenge Nursery Week 2 - www.refashionablylate.com

Here is where I am at with progress of the nursery:

  • Paint woodwork/trim
  • Paint ceiling
  • Paint walls
  • Change light fixture
  • Change outlets & switches
  • Wallpaper focus wall
  • Remove closet doors
  • Hang curtain rods
  • Hang drapes
  • Put bedding on
  • Hang shelves/artwork
  • Paint closet
  • Install closet system
  • Organize closet

Here is a sneak peek of the painted trim.  I did not paint the inner portions of the windows because they are vinyl windows and I did not want to mess with painting vinyl.  I’m worried it won’t keep very well. Hopefully, someday we can replace the windows and put in white windows! 🙂

The room is really starting to come together and I feel like most of the big projects are done!  I’m not going to lie…multiple times a day I go and sit on the floor and look at the new bright and beautiful nursery walls!  Thanks again to my sponsors for making this transformation possible!  And thank you to Sherwin-Williams for providing the paint to paint our woodwork!

Ruthie, the painted trim makes such a difference. Painting trim is a pain, but you’re right, it’s so worth it. I also used Extra White in eggshell in our bedroom, and I love it. Btw, here is a good post from Dans le Lakehouse about painting vinyl 🙂 http://www.danslelakehouse.com/2016/10/how-to-paint-vinyl-floor-diy-painted.html

My name is Ruthie, I was born and raised in the Midwest.  I met the man of my dreams in Nashville, TN and decided to follow him back home to California.  First came love, then came marriage, then came the baby in the baby carriage.  My husband got a new job when my daughter was 2 months old and we packed up and moved halfway across the country to Minnesota, back to my homeland. We now have two beautiful little girls.
